Adding on with Accessories

Having a stylish collar, harness, and leash is just the beginning, of course. There are endless ways to up your pup’s style game.

THE BASICS

These are the practical considerations any dog mom must take into account to keep her pup comfortable and cozy. Every dog mom has at least these essentials in her closet:

Sweaters and pup parkas. In cold climates, dog sweaters and pup parkas are a necessity when temperatures start to drop. You’ll likely want sweaters in a variety of colors and patterns, and outerwear to match the climate: perhaps a slick yellow rain jacket or a puffy pink parka (or both!).

Snow boots and snow socks. And in big cities with snow, adorable snow boots or snow socks are essential to protect paws from salted sidewalks. You might want to have your camera phone ready to record the first time you put socks or shoes on your pup, though. The herky-jerky reactions as they try to figure what exactly is on their paw can be hilarious.

Cooling bandanas. For the hot dog days of summer, there are cooling bandanas in plenty of shades, a festive way to hide an ice pack near your pup’s neck and chest.

EVERYDAY ACCESSORY FUN

Any dog mom knows that dressing your dog can be pure fun, whether it’s a funny T-shirt or a full-blown costume. Don’t be afraid to go a little overboard!

T-shirts. A few popular sayings include:

•Mama’s Good Boy

•Fur Baby

•I’m Here to Paw-ty

•Feast Mode

•Bad to the Bone

•Ruff Life

•Voted Most Paw-pular

Bright bowties. To step up your pup’s look from fine to fancy instantly, add a bowtie to his or her collar. These quirky and creative details instantly make your dog stand out in a crowd, whether it’s for a day of window shopping on Main Street or a formal affair. It’s a classy look for both boys and girls. Gert wore a white bowtie collar with a white leash for our wedding, and she was the talk of the town!

Bandanas. Bandanas give you an easy way to update your pet’s look, and there are endless variations: patriotic and sports-themed, colorful and kitschy, solid and patterned. You can even make them yourself from old fabric scraps or T-shirts! If you’re less of DIY mama, check out Etsy or your local pet boutique for a plentiful selection of options.

Hair clips. Hair clips can be adorned with a wide variety of flirty options, from brightly colored bows to floral accents. Note that your pup has to have a certain type of fur to truly accommodate these!
